A student of economics and science at York University (Canada) Stephen began his career with a prominent full service brokerage firm in Toronto. He joined Etrade as an agency trader during the electronic trading revolution of the dot com heydays. Stephen moved to Hong Kong in 2004 with an appointment at Fimat a leading futures broker in Asia then on to MF Global as Vice President of Institutional and DMA sales. He then moved to Citi as Vice President of Electronic Execution. Stephen is currently the Principal of AsiaEtrading.com (http://www.asiaetrading.com) the leading electronic trading industry portal for Asia.

Mr. Thomas J. McMahon is the former CEO of the Singapore Mercantile Exchange SMX, as well as past President of the Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange Limited HKMEX.

Currently Mr. McMahon is the MD and CEO of P.A.C.E., Pan Asia Clearing Enterprise, set up to address the impending regulatory shifts that will be introduced regarding Dodd-Frank, FSA, EU-EMIR and Basel III.

Mr. McMahon, who was formerly based in NYMEX’s Singapore and Tokyo offices, has more than 25 years of futures industry experience. He was hired in 2004 as NYMEX director of Asia after acting as an advisor to the Exchange in its agreement to link NYMEX ACCESS® with the Tokyo Commodity Exchange from July 2004

In launching NYMEX Asia, Mr. McMahon brought the established Energy and Metals contracts of the exchange to the Asian business community and instituted a development program for Asia region specific contracts. In September 2005 NYMEX launched Singapore 180 fuel oil swap. This was followed by a 380 bunker swap and the East West Swap, tying the European refiners market to Southeast Asia. In the course of launching the new products Mr. McMahon established good working relationships with the various regional regulatory agencies including the SFC, CSRC, MAS, METI, MOF, FMC and DFSA.

From 1993 to 2003, Mr. McMahon was an owner-operator of Gaslink.Com., focusing on the order execution of natural gas futures and options contracts. He began his career as a member of the New York Cotton Exchange and the New York Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange, which is known by now the NYBOT. He became a member of NYMEX in 1982. In 1984, he served as vice chairman of the petroleum advisory committee, prior to the launch of the gasoline futures contract. Mr. McMahon was elected onto the NYMEX board of directors in 1987 and served as chairman of natural gas advisory and petroleum delivery committee leading up to the launch of the natural gas futures contract.


Jennifer Ilkiw manages the IntercontinentalExchange’s® (NYSE: ICE) Asia Pacific operations. ICE operates leading regulated exchanges, trading platforms and clearing houses serving global markets for agricultural, credit, currency, emissions, energy and equity index markets. ICE operates three futures exchanges including London-based ICE Futures Europe, which hosts trading in half of the world's crude and refined oil futures contracts traded each day. ICE Futures U.S. and ICE Futures Canada list agricultural, currency and Russell Index futures and options markets. ICE also provides trade execution, processing and clearing services for the over-the-counter (OTC) energy and credit derivatives markets.

ICE manages its Asia Pacific operations from its headquarters in Singapore which was officially opened in 2000.

Prior to joining ICE, Ms Ilkiw opened and managed the Asia Pacific office of the New York Mercantile Exchange and helped to develop Singapore as a commodity derivatives trading centre in her role as Assistant Director with the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Ms Ilkiw is a committee member of the Financial Women’s Association of Singapore and an active participant in Singapore’s financial community. She earned a bachelors degree in economics from Queens’ University in Canada and a masters of business administration from the University of Toronto in Canada. Ms. Ilkiw also contributed to a textbook on international business in the Asia Pacific published in 2004.

Lawrence Low is a Managing Director and Associate General Counsel at J.P. Morgan with responsibility for derivatives and structured finance legal coverage in Asia Pacific ex Japan. His primary focus is the legal risk management for sales and trading activities in fixed income, equity and commodities derivatives in the region. He also has responsibility for structured loans, physical commodities trading and treasury investments. 

He has more than 15 years experience in finance and derivatives. Prior to joining J.P. Morgan in 2007, he held a number of private practice as well as in-house legal positions in capital markets, derivatives and asset securitisation, based in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo.

He participated in a number of key derivatives industry initiatives including the development of the ISDA credit derivatives definitions and the preparation for European monetary union. He is also a former co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Legal and Regulatory Committee of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, Inc.  

He graduated from Cambridge University in 1990 and qualified as a Solicitor in England and Wales as well as Hong Kong.

Professor Tom James is an international natural resource executive and entrepreneur with a broad 22 year career in natural resources trading, investment banking and knowledge based services. He has shared his knowledge and successfully trained many 1000's of traders and management in the sector via regular public seminars, and through his work with universities. He has held the Petronet Lng chair professorship at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies since 2006.

Tom co-founded Navitas Resources, an energy and commodity knowledge based services group, headquartered in Singapore with offices and associates at key locations around the world. Clients include some of the world’s major oil and mining firms, investment banks and state owned enterprises in this sector.

Professor Tom James MEI, MA, expertise includes Oil, Gas, Bio Fuels, LNG, and Global Commodity markets including emissions markets, agriculture markets, and metals. His broad experience covers investment, trading and business strategy across the globe with a particular focus on Asian, Central Asian, Middle East and European Markets. Tom acts as a senior consultant to industry and as an Expert reviewer, Expert Witness and Investigator in litigation and arbitration cases.
