A student of economics and science at York University (Canada) Stephen began his career with a prominent full service brokerage firm in Toronto. He joined Etrade as an agency trader during the electronic trading revolution of the dot com heydays. Stephen moved to Hong Kong in 2004 with an appointment at Fimat a leading futures broker in Asia then on to MF Global as Vice President of Institutional and DMA sales. He then moved to Citi as Vice President of Electronic Execution. Stephen is currently the Principal of AsiaEtrading.com (http://www.asiaetrading.com) the leading electronic trading industry portal for Asia.

Mr. Thomas J. McMahon is the former CEO of the Singapore Mercantile Exchange SMX, as well as past President of the Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange Limited HKMEX.

Currently Mr. McMahon is the MD and CEO of P.A.C.E., Pan Asia Clearing Enterprise, set up to address the impending regulatory shifts that will be introduced regarding Dodd-Frank, FSA, EU-EMIR and Basel III.

Mr. McMahon, who was formerly based in NYMEX’s Singapore and Tokyo offices, has more than 25 years of futures industry experience. He was hired in 2004 as NYMEX director of Asia after acting as an advisor to the Exchange in its agreement to link NYMEX ACCESS® with the Tokyo Commodity Exchange from July 2004

In launching NYMEX Asia, Mr. McMahon brought the established Energy and Metals contracts of the exchange to the Asian business community and instituted a development program for Asia region specific contracts. In September 2005 NYMEX launched Singapore 180 fuel oil swap. This was followed by a 380 bunker swap and the East West Swap, tying the European refiners market to Southeast Asia. In the course of launching the new products Mr. McMahon established good working relationships with the various regional regulatory agencies including the SFC, CSRC, MAS, METI, MOF, FMC and DFSA.

From 1993 to 2003, Mr. McMahon was an owner-operator of Gaslink.Com., focusing on the order execution of natural gas futures and options contracts. He began his career as a member of the New York Cotton Exchange and the New York Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange, which is known by now the NYBOT. He became a member of NYMEX in 1982. In 1984, he served as vice chairman of the petroleum advisory committee, prior to the launch of the gasoline futures contract. Mr. McMahon was elected onto the NYMEX board of directors in 1987 and served as chairman of natural gas advisory and petroleum delivery committee leading up to the launch of the natural gas futures contract.


Ketan Patel is Senior Vice President in the Market Development Division and Head of OTC Risk Management at HKEx .   Ketan manages a team of market, credit, policy and quantitative risk experts.    Prior to joining HKEX, Mr. Patel work at CME Group where he lead quantitative modellers and risk policy efforts internally known as Risk Research.

He earned his MBA, with concentrations in analytics finance and economics, from the University of Chicago.  Ketan earned his bachelor’s degree in management, with concentrations in finance, international business and economics, from Purdue University. 

Robert Rooks is an experienced financial market professional with over 20 years of experience in the financial sector.  With his unique expertise in in the securities, financial, regulatory and structuring industries, Robert became an independent Capital Markets Consultant.  In this role, he provides strategic advisory services to a wide range of financial institutions on matters such as market entrance, local and regional regulatory license applications, custodial and settlement services in the Asia Pacific region.  He has also published numerous articles on market structure, technology, clearing and settlement.    

Prior to his venture as a Capital Markets Consultant, Robert worked at SunGard Global Services in Asia Pacific as a Partner in Capital Markets, Asset Management and Alternative Investments.  He managed a team of Consultants in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia and was responsible for the development of an advisory consulting group that worked with the region’s top financial institutions delivering operational business analysis. 

In 2009, he served as the Chief Administration Officer in Hong Kong for Chi-X.  He was responsible for all aspects of Chi- X’s legal, financial and regulatory submissions and applications throughout the region.  He was mandated to establish Chi-X as an alternative trading venue to the regions incumbent exchanges with an initial focus on Australia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.  

Jessica Morrison is the Head of Asia Pacific Market Structure for Deutsche Bank. A role that is still new to Asia, she focuses on the effect that changes in regulation and technology have on trading behaviours in Equity products. In this examination the group consider current events and micro structure - the impact of structural change on quantitative features including volumes, turnovers, volatility, correlation and spreads. This analysis is used for both internal positioning and for Deutsche Bank clients.

Jessica is also the Co-Chair of the ASIFMA group for the Legal Entity Identifier ("LEI")effort looking to promote the use of a global standard within APAC. She actively participates in industry consultations, as well as proactively lobbying on topics including the closing auction mechanism on the HKEx.  She also sets up client education events on topics such as the recent SFC short position reporting requirements.

Having moved to Hong Kong in January, Jessica has worked for Deutsche since early 2009, initially in Compliance. She previously worked for Morgan Stanley's Equity Compliance team through the introduction of MiFID and the 2008 crisis. Jessica holds an MA in Law from the University of Cambridge.

Mr. Van den Brande brings 30 years of financial operations & technology expertise to HKMEx, leading the Operations & Technology team to launch a state-of-the-art trading platform in Asia. A well-respected industry veteran, Mr Van den Brande possesses a broad track record of global and regional experience, ranging from business & technology management to financial technology consulting.

Prior to joining HKMEx, Mr Van den Brande was Managing Director of Iflex Consulting (Asia-Pacific) Pte. Ltd., responsible for managing the company's strategy, management and development in the Asia-Pacific region.

From 1998 to 2006 he was a founding partner of financial markets consultancy Capco. He  launched and managed its Asia operations. Mr Van den Brande joined Capco from IBM, where he was Global Business Development Manager for Capital Markets Solutions. During this period he played key roles in some of the major infrastructure projects such as CLS (Continuous Linked Settlement), the real time settlement system for foreign exchange trades and Deutsche Borse Clearing AG.
